About pings – The Sad Truth (Guide)

• Navigate to the folder: ‘program files\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players’ and open the file config_mp.cfg

• Change scoresping_interval from 100 to 20, and maxbars from 4 to 10 (10 is the max).

• If I’m interpreting things correctly, this means that each of the 10 bars represents 20ms, with full green being 20ms or lower, and 1 red being 200ms or higher.

The truth? You might wanna pound a few beers before you read this:

• The host is immediately obvious, he’s the guy with 0-20 ping (full green).
• I usually connect with about 101-200+ms.
• Most people are connected at 200+ms (3 or less bars on normal cfg settings).
• On regular cfg settings, 4 bars means up to 0-100 ping, 3 bars up to 101-200, 2 bars up to 201-300, 1 bar is 301+.

Background Information
• Ping the measurement, in milliseconds, of how long it takes for your computer to send a signal to the host (shot fired) and receive a response (hit or miss).
• Ping below 40ms is optimal. The higher past 0ms, the worse it is.
• 100ms is considered very bad, as that means a 1/10th of a second delay between when you take an action and when you learn whether it accomplished the desired affect. Past 100ms it begins to get more and more noticeable.
• The delay begins to get particularly noticeable around 150ms (1.5 tenths of a second delay).
• NAZINet (formerly IWNet) is a P2P system, meaning you connect directly to someone’s home connection. This means you are practically guaranteed a ping greater than 100ms, unless you host. Conversely, the host is practically guaranteed a ping lower than 40ms.
• P2P systems conceal the truth by showing bars instead of numbers. 4 bars means either you are host, or else mild fail. 3 bars or less is an epic fail.

    IWnet is super shit, excuse my French.
    It takes a good 5 mins (if your lucky) to find 1 match. On lame ass days, itll happily serve you a good 20 mins wait + lag for your trouble.
    Could it get any better? Yes.
    You do crackshots that COULDNT miss, you spray with smgs, you knife, you do all this shit that clearly hit.. and miss?
    Also, Valve is also a big buttlicker. I combat hackers approx. 1 per 2 months. The most common hack is, unfortunately, wall hacks. Recently I've been encountering, mixed hacks - wall hacks and headshot aimbots put together.
    One guess at what their kdr is. 43 kills or so per death.

    IW, sorry pals, but I wont be playing your next game online unless its got dedicated servers, mods and all the other stuff that made CoD4 the game of the year.

    Not true, actually. I've played on 360 and PS3, and the lag pisses me off incredibly. It LOOKS like it's not lagging, but if you watch carefully there are important disagreements between what occurs on your screen and what occurs on killcams. For example, when coming around a corner I will see someone, get two M1014 shots off, and then die. Looking back at their killcam, I NEVER FIRED AT ALL. Or once, I purposely hid behind a wall to reload an MG4, and then somehow died. Looking at killcam, I was standing out in broad daylight, about 3 feet from where my screen said I was. If you watch killcams, the lag is incredible in at least 50% of games.

    I feel like playing COD Warfare 2 now.
    But seriously now. I play it on PS3 and yeah, it does lag. Given I'm on wireless internet and the reception it gets from the router is not that great, for my laptop on the same wireless connection I can get 150kb/s, which for Australia is not too bad.

    I've had multiple occasions where I have been looking down through a window and unloaded 30 bullets into an unsuspecting foe, only to have them look behind themselves and turn around and kill me - and on killcam I don't even take a shot.

    Furthermore I found that during nighttime the ping is somewhat ok with upto 3-4 (green) bars for lag (At best). Playable, I think the max is 5 or six?. Anyway, after say Midnight and a bunch of Server DC, I get put into other games where I'm connected to a remote server, and getting a ping resulting in 1-2, and 3 if I'm REALLY lucky and where its really laggy.

    And as an aside, frankly, what is with Prestige? 10 prestige modes? Who has the time and will to waste doing all those?

    Wow, you PC boys have it really bad from the sounds of it because i own a ps3 and the P2P hosting works great for us. The thing i don't understand is though that 1-3 bars for you is bad from the majority of what u are saying.... on the ps3, i can barely see a difference between 2-4 bars. (yellow - full green)

    I also own it on PS3 and P2P is NOT fine. Console players simply do not know any better than P2P because they have never had dedicated servers. Plus your controls are laggy compared to a keyboard mouse and the console version of games have much larger hitboxes.
    Dedicated servers should be on ALL platforms, not just PC and then you console guys will understand exactly what you have been missing out on.
    Do not put up with P2P anymore, it is a cheap way for the developers to limit the lifespan of the game and is ntohing but pure lazyness and greed

    The P2P system doesnt work great for you either, you just dont have the meanings of reflecting it for yourself. As an example, lets assume we have 2 players with a ping of 200ms to the host. Further one of the players is behind the other one, and is seeing him. The player that is about to get shot is 0.4 seconds behind where he originally was(200msec for transferring his position and actions to the host, and another 200msec from the host to the shooting player). Normally you would miss him, because you have no idea where his real model/hitbox is, but my guess is, that the kills are(in order for the whole thing to work)client based, which means you shoot, and the game registers the hits based on the enemy player model for the shooting player. And now the hit registration has another delay of 0.4 seconds, until the notification will arrive the victim. Hackedrightoff already said it, that on the kill-cam it looks legit, but my guess is that also is just a short record from the killing player showing you getting killed, and of course for the killer it seems like he was just shooting someone.

    PS: I´m just saying this based on logic with poor knowledge about the actual thing itself. The whole comment could be just a piece of garbage.

    Well, Frontliner, thnxs for the info and i can see where your coming from and its all true but the thing is i have no problem finding a game that DOESN'T lag. Thats at any time of the day(Im from Australia btw). Whatever they did after one of the recent updates has fixed the problem of finding overseas hosts. I'm not saying its perfect cause every now and then u get a lag game but its definately an improvement from previous CODs, for consoles atleast.

    P.S I know im not a knowledgeable person on the subject, thats cause im not a heavy gamer. Im just stating what i know from what ive played.

    Not much longer before Teknogods finishes their dedicated server launcher. Good for everyone, but yet again the idiocy of a publisher and developer have created an inferior product for the paying customer.

    So an internal connection got higher ping than I get when connecting to the best RCTW - Enemy Territory server I know of (it is literally 30 km from me, near the "hub" of the Internet connection for my country). Niiiiice.

    Yes, in fact. See, if the host is a REALLY good computer, then the local ping will be in the nanoseconds. However, if the host is crap, then the game is lagging out the hosting PC from itself. I have had this happen in other games, like L4D2 while hosting, although I cannot speak for MW2 since I don't own the game.

    Fist MP game of MW 2 and first thing I noticed was lag because I wasnt host ! This game is shit ! And only those morons who got brainwashed by IW and Activisions marketing machinery still like and buy this piece of crap.

    I bought the game with great pleasure, it was rated Game Of The Year or something. Afterwards i realized it was somekinda poopendal created to be sold through polished-propaganda commercials. Face it: MW2 is poorly made game. So many little things that make you hate the game after theres too much of em. I mean when were aeroplane turbines non-spinning, even though theres flow of air, or skyboxes/backgrounds pixelated rubbish on "extra" graphics ? I was VERY dissapointed. Glad that the multiplayer is pretty fun, but IWnet is just CRAP, the pings and all... god damnit.
  • I agree, theres nothing in MW2 that stops you from playing and theres definitely nothing that stops us from connecting/finding other players. All of the criticism will slowly die out. Its MW2; just love it for all it is.
    Though the next Warefare will cause the same amount of stir for one reason or another....

    Lol...90% of games I go into almost every person has 4 bars. When I host every person has decent ping. You idiots need to stop trying to find flaws just because you didnt get your little dedi servers, get a grip. Gaming is about money, nothing else. You yourself have seen the amount of money the game has made so obviously you lot are the minority.

    To put some perspective on the ping numbers, when I used to play QuakeWorld and Quake2 I usually got pings around 140ms. Of course everyone else had similar numbers so no-one had a big advantage. The worrying thing is that this was 10 years ago and I was on dial-up. 100+ms ping today is a joke.

    Yeah, I used to rock a 150+ ping on Counterstrike beta 5.2 way back in 2000 on my awesome ISDN line.

    Good times, everyone going "laaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggg omg lagggg anybody else lagging lagggg" and people teleporting around the map like wizards casting magic bullets.

    In that way, MW2 is a very nostalgic game for me, except there are less players and the map design is shittier.

    Yeah, awesome times with Kazaa. Nothing was ever what the filename said it was, every non-mp3/avi file contained malware, and porn clips so short they might as well be gifs.

    8kb/s was awesome compared to the usual what was it, 3 or 4 kb/s? Waiting all day for a 80 MB download only to have it time out at 75 MB.

    Now we can party like it's the late 90s thanks to IWNET.

    Edited the config to get the 10 bars, lucky to get in a game with 4 bars, this is atrocious, the amount of times i've been killed due to me apparently not being stood where i was, and the likes of enemies coming around the corner already firing at you, seems dodgy, then on the killcam everything looks ligit
