MW2 Gamer: ‘Thanks for getting me in trouble Infinity Ward’

Interesting posts are arising at the official IW forums regarding cable companies contacting MW2 players regarding ‘running servers on their home connection’ and ‘excessive file sharing through peer to peer connections’. This is in direct line with the article I wrote earlier regarding ‘IWnet forces most MW2 players to violate their ISP´s TOS & AUP’.

I received a letter from time-warner cable which I would type out but it would take me 20 minutes. the letter basically says that they think I have a virus thats sending/receiving information.”when computers that are connected to the network become infected with viruses and other intrusions, serious problems can arise, such as degradation of network performance and he infection of other users” It directs to link for virus removal. I can assure you I do not have a virus as I did a fresh install of windows 7 the day before mw2 came out. I dont open any emails, and really the only thing I do on that computer is play games. Its my gaming computer, I use my laptop for everything else and I know 100% I do not have a virus nor have I had.

They say “We ask you to bear in mind that continued violations of the road runner acceptable use policy can result in suspension or even termination of your road runner account”

This is complete and utter bull crap. Thanks Infinity Ward/Activision for nearly getting my internet shutoff. Im done with this game.

I got a call from my ISP saying this:

Dear Customer

It has come to our attention that you are running servers on your home connection.
While this is not allowed, we inform you that measurements can be taken when continuos usage.
We regret to inform you that hosting servers at your home connection is not allowed, we have special packages for server connections.

Now this is translated from my native language, I had to call up my ISP and tell them the problem.

This is a serious problem, IW is just using your computer to host the games.
I work as a network admin myself and had to explain myself to my ISP why this is happening.
Most of the times i’m leaving games that i’m hosting because i don’t want my connection to be used as gameserver.
IW fails to see that UPnP and a open NAT is dangerous to your network.

Yeah now peoples internet bills are coming in, everyone is getting things like this. My friend got stuck with a $40 addition to his internet bill. Hes since deleted his game and wont touch it again because its not hardly worth that type of expense

i’ve already gotten a mail from my isp telling me they are reducing my 20 meg line to dial up speed for the next month for “excessive file sharing through peer to peer connections” and i will be cut off if i persist.

tried telling them that its a pc game thats causing it, their reply is pc games do not use p2p

    Is this real?

I completely agree with iNtOx when he says that he will not be buying any more CoD games from IW. However, Treyarch has NOT completely screwed up like Infinity Ward yet, and they are currently working on CoD 7. I am willing to try that game if they continue to implement dedicated servers.
  • Wharrgarbl
Whoops, I meant it in the same sense as iNtOx (I.E. They dont give us a patch for dedicated servers)
  • ZeRo_InSaNiTy
Weird. Im running bell 512kbps portable and it has no bandwidth cap. I torrent every day because of the unlimited bandwidth and I've never had a complaint from them. GO BELL CANADA!!!1
  • iNtOx
If they would only release a patch for dedicated servers...I bought this game too and got to lvl 24...then suddenly I can't find any games anymore or connect to anyone. Unless this gets fixed I will not be buying the next CODs or any other games from IW.

Don't see why they're blaming Infinity Ward instead of blaming their retarded ISPs. Since when is file sharing illegal? Did they check the content of those "shared files"?
If I'd get a stupid letter like that from my ISP, I'd switch.
  • iRageQuit
A ton of ISPs check for filesharing all over the globe.

Also, they do not check the content of the files, since it would all be gibberish anyway if they did not know what they were looking at.

Rather, they check for activity on certain ports commonly used by filesharing programs, and IW was smart enough to use those for IWNET.
  • ouch major suxor on the guys having their internet yanked. begs the question why IW fudged IWNET for the PC, else surely console players would have had similar problems "hosting" games

and no i'm not part of rent-a-crowd

Xbox live probably uses different ports than IWNET on PC.

Think of ports as train tracks. The tracks that IWNET uses are known to be smuggling routes (P2P applications like bittorrent use them), so any traffic on them will immediately arouse suspicion of a watchful ISP.

In comparison, the tracks that Xbox 360s use are "clean" so they do not register on anti-P2P radars.

I just bought a 360 Prestige edition off eBay.

"their reply is pc games do not use p2p"

What about just sending them a link to IW's website? Or the PC forum? Or any of the sites that complain about this? (ModernWarfail2.com FTW!) Even UK PC Magazine can prove it: http://www.modernwarfail2.com/2009/12/02/modern...
  • TheRealDeal
Because I really doubt IW said that.
  • Torinir
IW has said a lot of garbage since the October announcement of no dedicated servers.

"their reply is pc games do not use p2p"

THAT ist so fucking truly epic!

Nonetheless, I have to sadly agree with my previous speakers. They got their money, so they won't change anything. They counted too much on the mass of uninformed gamers who trusted them in delivering an awesome CoD game thinking that if CoD 4 was such a blast, MW2 can't be possibly bad - and they all got fooled... :(

On the other hand, IW/Acti can't just rinse and repeat this nasty way for their next title because NOW at the latest every gamer is forewarned.

The fact is, nothing will be done because you've all bought the game, and that's all that matters to them. They've broken numerous sales records and it's all positive for them. Customer satisfaction is not at the forefront of their business.

I suggest everyone roll back to MW1 and play that from now on. Once they see the PC version has a significant drop in users, they may think about fixing things.
  • You pretty much nailed it. What's done is done. Rather than teach a lesson with the wallet, short term enjoyment was more important. They made a killing off of the weak.
  • Torinir
IW better hope that they don't go out of business or have to lay off people because of the future fallout from the whole MW2 debacle. I can foresee the current IW staff being blacklisted from the game developer community for all of this fail.

I'd be lucky if i convinced my ISP that the line quality isnt good at all, but instead i got new router, 2nd THIS month, 7th this year
tho p2p system just doesnt work for games

I love this line the most.

It's like telling the car mechanic that your horse carriage broke down, and he's just like "wtf."

Damn, I soo wanna take this fight personal!
Going to their headquarters and beating the crap out of their shitty minds!

Srry if this sounds inappropriate but I can't feel any different anymore due to ALL THESE FUCKED UP SITUATIONS WHICH THEY JUST IGNORE
