Unlimited Ammo ‘virus’ infects other Xbox 360 players like an STD

The Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 seems to be suffering from an STD. An 'unlimited ammo virus' seems to be spreading itself throughout Xbox Live. Several hundreds of Xbox 360 players have been reporting that they joined a MP match, then finding that ammo counter 'doesn't work' and that reloading times seem to be absent. In other words: unlimited ammo and virtually no reloading, on all weapons, including the AC-130 and the  grenade launcher for instance.

This 'virus' is that bad, that many people on Twitter are Tweeting that it has become unplayable or that they'll stick to the singleplayer until it has been fixed.

In contrary what most people think, this is NOT a glitch. It's a mod, created by a highly skilled monkey modder and bascially works like this:

You can "catch" it from private matches.
Once you have it, if you host everyone you're playing with has the "bug" and infinite ammo.
Any game they now host they infect everyone else playing with infinite ammo.
Basically infinite ammo is a private match setting that changes your config to be like "Infiniteammo=1"

Thing is, it would reset as soon as you leave the private match.
But the private match bug makes it stay on until you enter a new private match where it's off.
When you join a match your console sets it's settings to match the hosts. This is hard-coded into the engine to make the lobbies work, typically for gametype rules, to make sure everyone matches. This is a global thing. If he turned on god mode everyone would have god mode. If he changed gravity everyones gravity changes.

So someone has infinite ammo=1, you join. yours changes to 1 to match his. Later on someone joins your game, your using infinite ammo=1 so it "infects" his console and changes his.

Typically at the end of the match your console changes all the match settings back, but since infinite ammo isn't something they expected people to mess with, it isn't flagged to change back. Since the call to match host settings is a global thing, and the call to change it all back is entry specific.

In other words:

It passes from host to host. So if the original guy who has a modded 360 gets host (let's call him host zero) he can enable the infinite ammo cheat.
Then, host zero leaves. MW2 starts for a new host, and the information of host zero is passed on to the new host, "infecting" his cache.
As long as the new, infected host stays in the same lobby, it will keep spreading to new hosts.

To get rid of the mod, you'll have to disconnect from Live and reboot your 360.

For those of you interested in the technical details of the mod, I'm sorry but I have to disappoint you. Little is known about it at the moment.
But what I do can say is that it's basically a mod that has been installed by a modder on his xbox 360's harddrive using a hacked xbox 360 kernel. From there, it spreads further, as explained how above, to other people and it'll be stored on their hard drive as well, but not permanently, just in their cache thus the mod will be removed from your xbox 360 if rebooted, as stated above. Getting this hack to work on your own xbox 360 involves

Advanced knowledge of modding, A Flashed xbox, Transfer Cables and the correct profile editor files.

Luckily, IW is on it.. well, sort of. Good old Robby Tweets: "It's being addressed" and that "it'll be eliminated soon enough". Far from a concrete time line for an update, but at least it shows IW is aware of the problem and pretending they're looking into it.

Interesting detail: According to Xboxic, you actually may get banned from Xbox Live for using this unlimited ammo mod. Possibly it may be for only 24 hours but if you repeat the action again and get caught, the ban could be made permanent. LoL like you can help it you got infected by this 'virus'.

Now maybe those console sheep will finally turn on their masters (IW) about fucking time. I love every time this game gets fucked up.
  • shamwow
    just get the ps3 version.
    secure unhacked platform ftw.
  • "secure unhacked platform"...
    ROFL, you're joking, right?
    Right?

10th prestige hack for PS3. Go from level 1 to level 1 of 10th Prestige in a couple minutes because IW didn't lock down the savegame.

    Yep, TOTALLY secure /sarcasm

Dude have you even seen the leaderboards?

A revolt of united console and PC gamers? (jizzinpants)

Word on the street is that there's ANOTHER bug that will get this unlimited ammo bug spreading like wildfire.

Seems that some intrepid Xbox360 users have found a way to make private matches public.
  • DocMock
That would be fucking hilarious to see how even the beloved and catered consolers begin to fuck up the entire IWnet system.

Damn, IW, first you backstab the PC gamers and now even the consolers don't show you the proper respect you never deserved anyway - it's an ungrateful world, isn't it?

    Hey guys, read this

    The comments are AWESOME

    United gamers at its best!
  • I would argue that it is partially a glitch. After all, if it were just a modding problem, it would never go beyond the modded box itself. However, it glitches the client for everyone else meaning the modder is able to exploit a game glitch to affect everyone regardless of mods.

Yeah, it'll go away when either A) modders stop or are banned; or B) the private match XP glitch is fixed, thus containing the problem to modded private matches only; fact remains it's still a mod which causes a game glitch. A glitch that shouldn't exist.

And yes, it's bad on live. Try playing a 9v9 on Rust with unlimited AC130s running around and not getting a choice because the broke ass game decides to put you there. The only option is to back out, but if you got into one after it started not only are you going to take a loss for leaving but any deaths you get before you leave will also be counted against you. (Not that I give a damn about leaderboards, just pointing out the problems of this mod/glitch.)

Here's the problem: It will never go away. People will always find a way to dick things up, irrespective of the platform.

There's a reason mankind went from living in caves to manned spaceflight in (comparably) no time, and it's because we are clever bastards. Irrespective of whether we use our smarts for good or bad, where there's a will there's a way.

People will just mod their Xboxes again, and perhaps even find a way to spoof their GUID or hardware ID so that Microsoft, with all its money, will never find them.

The only thing that has prevented humans from being dicks throughout history is interference by other humans. So unless there are people policing every game, this will happen again and again and again.

"According to Xboxic, you actually may get banned from Xbox Live for using this unlimited ammo mod."

    Haha what bullshit.

Ok, I don't have an Xbox (no point since there's no Xbox Live in my country) but this is bullshit and I feel for people who might get banned for no reason other than joining a server with unlimited ammo going on.

They'll have to, once again, ban modded Xboxes to possibly get the original culprits.

However, this exposes a security flaw with modern consoles. Face it, modern consoles are basically glorified higher medium-end computers with the exact same vulnerabilities and security issues. They are more locked-down as of now, but people who absolutely want to hack and mod will always find a way around even the tightest security measures. P2P is thus as doomed on consoles as it always was on PCs. You simply cannot take the human element out of the anti-cheat chain. You need admins, even on consoles, to ensure smooth, cheat-free gameplay.

In the long run, this means involving the "hardcore" community (those buying, providing and administering dedicated servers) as much as the "casual" community.

Dedicated, administered servers will have to become the standard, since no anti-cheat measures will ever match the capabilities of a single human being within our lifetime.

This does not mean that DLC is impossible, it just means that systems as locked-down as MW2's P2P are no longer viable and will, in the end, waste more profits than a dedicated server system.

Match-making and dedicated server systems can absolutely co-exist, as has been proven by several games such as L4D2. It's time for developers and publishers to smell the coffee. Human ingenuity will always trump automated anti-cheating measures, what they need is human ingenuity to counter it. And that, by necessity, means dedicated servers.
  • "According to Xboxic, you actually may get banned from Xbox Live for using this unlimited ammo mod."

LOL NOT. They've only "threatened" people with negative results if they "stay in a glitched match.

They threatened suspensions and bans for people who abused the javelin glitch and I see people who were abusing the hell out of that glitch still playing even after entire parties reported them for using the glitch.

They're not going to ban anyone. Suspend, maybe. But even that is a long shot. They just banned over a million consoles for modding before the latest dashboard update and got raked over the coals for it: They're not going to suffer negative PR over one, "popular" game.
  • iRageQuit
Again, since I don't have an Xbox or access to Xbox Live (unless I buy a plane ticket to my cousin in Germany) how would a casual gamer know about these "negative consequences" (I love the hilariously vague wording, all it is missing is "OR ELSE" written in newspaper clippings)?

Is there some sort of general newsletter on Xbox Live, or are "casual" gamers just going to find themselves screwed one day?
  • I meant to reply to article but accidentally replied to you in my other post.

Yeah, they use supremely vague wording and sadly the only way I found out about the potential "negative impact" of "staying in a glitched match" was by looking at the official Xbox.com MW2 forums. No announcement on the console, no system wide info.. just a post that's already been buried on the MW2 xbox forums.

So if people didn't see it, they may find themselves being "punished" and have no idea why.
  • not balanced for brains
There are no cheats in consoles or viruses(whatever) unlike PC(whatever). LOL.
There are no words in any language that can describe the idiocy of IW/activision.
