ModernWarfail2 – The biggest FAIL in PC FPS gaming history

Forums are broken

Not only the Infinity Ward forums are broken, but so are the ModernWarfail2.com' forums. After both VPSes crashed yesterday, the forum hasn't come back online correctly, thus displaying the following error:

Notice: Undefined variable: sourcedir in /srv/www/forum/public_html/index.php on line 56

Warning: require_once(/QueryString.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /srv/www/forum/public_html/index.php on line 56

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/QueryString.php' (include_path='.:/opt/mw2/lib/php') in /srv/www/forum/public_html/index.php on line 56

I'm just letting you guys know we're aware of the problem and looking for a solution. Personally I would like to upgrade to vBulletin because I've totally had it with SMF and all it's gateway errors and stuff, but we need to look into the options of converting the current forum database to vBulletin, as I don't want to see any data go lost in the upgrade process.

I will keep you posted.

UPDATE: Aonic, our server booster and magician, managed to get the forums back up in just a couple of minutes.(Thanks !!). He also suggested that instead of upgrading straight to vBulletin, we should first try to upgrade to a newer SMF version (SMF 2.0 RC2). If that doesn't work, we can always upgrade to vBulletin later. The downside of upgrading to vBulleti,n is that all user passwords will go lost, thus you will have to reset your password via your email, which is annoying.

Forums are broken again it says

    General Error
    SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Host 'vps.modernwarfail2.com' is blocked because of many connection errors; unblock with 'mysqladmin flush-hosts' [1129]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.

The reseting of passwords won't really be an annoyance if given enough days notice.

The bad gateway is a server error. Has nothing to do with the SMF software. I'd suggest you think twice about switching from SMF. It has a better security record than phpbb and vbulletin if you look into it. Just my $02 though. I was wondering what theme you were using here, so I took a look at the source code. It's unfortunate you've taken the copyright off from the author.

The way some common things are done in SMF are really bad for performance. It seems the DB queries arent all that optimized, and some things are just plain fail. When you post an image in the body SMF actually opens a socket to the 3rd party server, downloads the image, and then uses imageGD to get the width/height of the image!

All these performance hits lead the php requests piling up and php-cgi falling over leading to bad gateway errors.

    What he said
  • KingOfTehInternets
Well, that is what Aonic told me and I can see a bit why. Aonic has modified the forum software to run on both VPSes so it's not just the average SMF forum, it has been modded a bit and I guess the 1.1 version of SMF doesn't really like it though.

Go for PhPBB3, its more secure and open source then VBUlletin.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will discuss it with Aonic

At least they didn't take 4 days to fix like the IW forums...
  • ShEsHy
4 days??? Try over 2 months, their forums haven't been working correctly from the beginning :p
  • Anarchy
    I mean their SQL errors
  • ShEsHy
Thought so, but still, I've seen inactive forums fixed faster than IW's.
  • never used smf myself, but i'm a huge fan of PHPBB3 forums, because of the simplicity and yet so complexity (sorry a tad philosophic there :p )

    ff int nederlands

    Good news :)
Hope that switching to newer SMF will help, personally don't like vBulletin :)
